IMG 0099Cellist, Wayne Smith gave his recital debut at the Kennedy Center in 1996 to critical acclaim. As soloist and chamber musician, he has performed through out the UnitedStates, Italy, Germany, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Poland, and China.


A highly sought-after chamber musician, he is a member of the Portland Piano Trio, the Harlem Chamber Players, the Wiastaria String Quartet and 1200 Horsehairs, contemporary cello quartet. He is is a frequent performer at Bargemusic and has appeared with the New Jersey Chamber Music Society, the Ritz Chamber Players, the Manhattan Chamber Players the National Chamber Orchestra, the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, and the Princeton Chamber Symphony. He is also part of the electronic duo, Arctic Moth.


Wayne made his concerto debut at the age of 20 with the Philharmonic of New Jersey. Since then, he has appeared numerous times as soloist with orchestra. While a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Wayne won the university concerto competition and performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the university orchestra. Wayne has recorded and performed with such artists as the Moody Blues, Joe, Richard Smallwood, Anthony Krizan of the Spin Doctors, and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

In addition to his performance engagements, he enjoys an active teaching career, currently serving on the faculty of Amherst College. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music with Steven Doane and pursued his graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with Astrid Schween, where he was the recipient of a full scholarship and teaching assistantship.
