Joanna Smulakowski, viola and violin, is a String Orchestra Director in the White Plains City School District and an active freelancer in New York. She attended NEMC as a camper for three years and taught viola at the core camp in 2011.
She graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music with a BM and MM in viola performance and graduated Hunter College with a Masters in Music Education. She has been the assistant principal violist of the Symphony of Westchester for six years and has played with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular Orchestra, DiCapo Opera, among other groups. A Suzuki and traditional method trained teacher, she loves teaching and playing in Westchester where she grew up. Ms. Smulakowski lives in Riverdale, New York with her husband and son Benjamin and daughter Sophie. She remembers being a camper at NEMC very fondly and learned to love playing in an orchestra at NEMC, so she is thrilled to be back teaching this summer.
