Gail B. Levinsky has performed within the United States, Canada and Europe, and includes presentations at the North American Saxophone Alliance, World Saxophone Congress, British Saxophone Congress, United States Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, Festival of Women Composers, Southeast Composers League and the Indiana State Contemporary Music Festival.
As a solo performer, Levinsky is active in commissioning and premiering new works for saxophone including works by Marilyn Shrude, Miho Sasaki, Matthew Quayle, Andrea Clearfield, Douglas McConnell, Jason Bahr, Michael Kallstrom, and Frank Ferko. Her CD recording Tipping Point: Music Saxophone & Other Voices explores the saxophone in a variety of chamber music settings, and features the compositions of Jason Bahr, Mark Engebretson, Paul Hayden, Matthew Quayle and Sonny Burnette.
Committed to the teaching and training of saxophone to others, Dr. Levinsky began her career teaching applied studies in the Dallas (TX) area. She regularly presents clinics at state music education symposiums, such as MENC Eastern Region Conference, PMEA, NHMEA, NJMEA DMEA, and the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic. In 2009, Levinsky published a new edition of Rosemary Lang’s “Beginning Altissimo Method” (Ensemble Publications).
Levinsky received her Bachelor of Music from Butler University, and the Master of Music, Graduate Certificate of Performance, and Doctorate in Music from Northwestern University where she studied with Dr. Frederick L. Hemke. Her dissertation, “An Analysis and Comparison of Early Saxophone Methods Published Between 1846-1946,” explores the first hundred years of published methods for teaching the saxophone. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Kappa Delta Pi honor fraternities, Who’s Who in America and held elected offices with the North American Saxophone Alliance, with which she presently serves as its Region VIII director.
