Kim Wiggin is a graduate of the Hartt School of Music with a Bachelor of Arts in voice and music education, and received a Masters of Arts in Special Education from the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut. She has taught special education in both public and private schools in Connecticut for over 30 years. She is currently the Director of Academic Support at Suffield Academy in Suffield, Connecticut, where she holds the Kim Wiggin Chair in Academic Support, and manages the individualized academic programs for over 60 students. At Suffield, she also helps vocal coach the annual musical, and is responsible for the international travel and service programs to Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa. She returned to New England Music Camp in 1995 as the head counselor, and has been a director since 2004. She is also the secretary of the New England Music Camp Association.
Kim has been very involved in community service work at both the local level through the Episcopal church and local schools, and internationally. She is currently helping to build two schools in Ghana in Western Africa, where she spends a few weeks each year.
Matthew Wiggin is a graduate of College of Santa Fe with a BFA in Musical Theater and is currently working on his Masters in Arts Administration from the University of Connecticut. At Snow Pond, Matthew works primarily with the summer programs and is the coordinator of the summer music series. A member of Actors’ Equity, Matthew brings a career in theater to Snow Pond. Credits include the National Tour of Legally Blonde, as well as regional productions of Oklahoma!, Grease, Happy Days, Spamalot, The Wedding Singer, Pal Joey, A Chorus Line, A Christmas Carol, Anything Goes, Mame, and Hair. Choreography and Direction credits include productions of Spring Awakening, Sister Act, Legally Blonde, A Chorus Line, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, The Miracle Worker, The Women and A Piece of My Heart. During the year, Matthew teaches Theater, Music and Dance at Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child in Summit, New Jersey. He currently lives in Bloomfield, NJ with his husband, Stephen, and their Basset Hound, Norman. He and Stephen are proud to carry on the Snow Pond/NEMC legacy in generation four!
Bill Tortolano is an arts management consultant, arts commission/grants panel member and active freelance violinist in the Washington, DC area. He regularly performs with the Washington Concert Opera, National Gallery Orchestra and Washington Bach Consort (period instruments). He served for over 20 years with The United States Air Force Band, performing at the White House, Vice President’s residence, State Department, Pentagon and other high level venues. Additionally, he served as Chief Flight Arranger, Director for Audience Development and Director of Alumni & Veterans Affairs.

Michael McCarthy has spent the last twenty-eight summers teaching at the New England Music Camp. He is a freelance choral conductor, adjudicator, clinician and accompanist in the New England/New York area. Choral groups under his direction have been invited to perform at MENC Eastern Division conferences and ACDA state conferences.
A church organist for over forty-six years, Mr. McCarthy has just retired after thirty years as Director of Music and Organist at Saint Joseph Church in Willimantic, Connecticut, where he presided over the historic 37-rank Steer & Turner/Maier organ (built in 1874). He continues to serve as Pontifical Organist for the Diocesan Choir of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich. He is a former Dean of the Northeast Connecticut Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is currently the chapter’s Sub-Dean and Placement Officer. He is a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society. He has been inducted into such honorary and professional fraternities as Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Kappa Phi, and Alpha Chi. Mr. McCarthy holds Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Education and Applied Bassoon from the Hartt School of Music and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from The University of Connecticut. He has spent the last forty years working with numerous school and community choirs and theaters.

Bethany Niedbala has been connected to NEMC since 2002, when she began as a camper in UpDorm. She has worked as a counselor, in the canteen, and in the music library. Currently, she serves as the Registrar, assisting campers and parents with the admissions process, as well as creating student and faculty schedules during the summer season. During the school year, Bethany is an active violist and music educator, teaching strings in the Greater Boston area. She continues to share NEMC with prospective families and can be seen on the ski slopes in the winter. Bethany’s favorite NEMC memory is watching shooting stars during the final candlelight ceremony!

Marian Murphy Powell is an accomplished singer and theatrical artist who brings a versatile background to her work on stage and into the teaching studio. A veteran of national Broadway tours and regional theatre productions, her favorite roles include: Cosette in Les Misérables, Christine in Phantom, Mother in Bright Lights, Big City, Marian in The Music Man, Fleur in Esmeralda (world premiere), Mary Jane Wilkes in Big River and Fiona in Brigadoon.
Most recently, she performed the role of Miss Foley to critical acclaim, in the world premiere of Something Wicked This Way Comes. She has been featured with several orchestras around the world, including the Shanghai Symphony and the Concordia Orchestra at New York’s Lincoln Center. She has three solo recordings: “This Must Be Love”, a jazz CD “Live at the Saturday Club” with renowned jazz pianist Bill Schmearer, and, “Amazed By You” written by pianist/composer Matthew Quayle. She can also be heard as a guest artist on Gail Levinsky’s recently released “Tipping Point”. Marian holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Performer’s Certificate of Merit from the School of Music at the State University of New York in Fredonia and earned her Actor’s Equity Association membership with the Tennessee Repertory Theatre’s Young Artist Program. As a member of NATS, she is a private voice teacher, is an adjunct vocal instructor at The George School and is a freelancing artist in the greater Philadelphia area. Marian is an alumna of NEMC and has been a member of the faculty for twenty-two years.
Rachel Mears is a mother of four who’s love for NEMC started when she was first a camper in 1989. After being a camper
as a percussionist for several years, she became a counselor during summers while studying Child Development at Cornell University.
Her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from John Carroll University and teaching career allowed Rachel to returned to camp as Assistant Girl’s Counselor for a few summers before becoming a mother. While she has never gone a summer since 1989 without visiting NEMC, Rachel is thrilled to be back as Head Girl’s Counselor after having to sit on the sidelines while her children enjoyed being campers. Rachel brings the unique perspective of having lived
many different roles at camp. She can see things from the perspective of being a camper, counselor, Head Counselor, alumni, and most importantly, as a parent. During the school year in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Rachel teaches preschool and serves as a personal driver for her sons, Logan, Cooper and Tucker for their involved hockey, lacrosse, and baseball schedules. When she is not at a hockey rink or a field you can find her at the dance studio while Tatum, her daughter, dances her little heart out.
For 80 years, John’s family has had the privilege of being the stewards of this magical place known as Snow Pond Center for the Arts. As the Director of Snow Pond for the last 8 years, John is the visionary and entrepreneur that has turned Snow Pond from a summer camp to a year-round arts education facility. He has successfully produced notable improvements to learning and education in central Maine by working with local organizations, businesses and civic/community leaders.
Prior to 2007, John spent 30 years in-group disability insurance making revolutionary improvements in how the disability insurance companies provided benefits and services to employers and their employees. From 1985-1996, John worked for Hartford Life, growing the annual premiums from $40 million to almost $1 billion. In 1996 John founded a full service disability reinsurance company and grew premiums to $350 million and managed claim revenues of over $1 billion.
Christa brings a wealth of experience in the areas of marketing, public relations and event planning. She has worked for over 25 years in the field, including 9 years as the Vice President of Marketing for Sotheby’s Chicago. Christa is a visible and active participant in the events and culture of NEMC and Snow Pond and her responsibilities include: implementing annual campaigns; assisting with the cultivation of new prospective donors; overseeing marketing/communication efforts including website/social media; managing special events/fundraisers, and supervising the submission of grant request. She currently sits on the Board of the Reed Trust Fund and was recently nominated to the Board of the Viles Arboretum, in Augusta, Maine.
Executive Head Chef
Snow Pond Center for the Arts couldn’t be happier to announce its new Executive Head Chef Tim Lewis, or as he prefers to be called, Chef Tim. Chef Tim will be bringing his culinary expertise to all of Snow Pond’s events including its tasting menus, farm to table dinners, holiday menus, along with all of its concerts and special events. He will also be curating and overseeing the menus for all of Snow Pond’s core summer programs including the New England Music Camp, the Snow Pond Music Festival and the New England Adult Music Camp.
Chef Tim brings an enormous amount of experience with the farm-to-table culinary philosophy and will be working closely with many of the area farms in Central Maine to build a repertoire of simple cooking that lets the true flavors of every dish shine through.
Chef Tim is one of the Chefs for a Hollywood reality company called Casting Duo and has casted folks in Maine reality food shows such as Family Food Fight. He also co-hosts a radio segment on The George Hale & Ric Tyler Show, which focuses on educating the Maine Restaurant & Foodie Community. The show airs on Wednesdays at 8:00am on FM radio stations 103.9 Bangor, 101.3 Augusta/Waterville and 95.1 Rockland, Maine.
Prior to joining Snow Pond, Chef Tim was The Corporate Chef to Fiore Artisan Olive Oils & Vinegars, and traveled Maine participating in Chef competitions and trade shows developing recipes and unique ideas for Fiore product uses. Some of his early employment has been at renowned establishments such as The Farmington Country Club Farmington, CT. as the Saucier Chef circa 1990, The Whitman House, Avon, CT. Garde Manger Chef circa 1993. He also mastered his Italian Culinary skills by working for Icon Chef Armando Boccia at Restorante de Armando’s in Hancock, Maine.
